Nekro Drunkz, Oregon’s filthiest sons, here summon a horrific amalgam of Thrashing dummy Death Metal and punk as fukk toilet burbling Goregrind. Deathly, insanely maniacal head banging pervert trash Thrash and absolutely decimating wall-of-shit Gore/Grindcore – Chaotic and intense, erect, violent and steaming fucken drunk. Necrotized and insane sounding, callous and perverse. In taking sound cues from all the squelchiest, stinkiest elements of Deathgrind, Death Metal, Grindcore, Goregrind, Thrash and maybe even a bit of Crusty Punk, Nekro Drunkz have conjured an avalanche of septik deth straight from the bowels of fukken hades. Mad catchy headbang (handbang?) summoning riffing, stomping thrashed out drumming with lots of blast beats, and furious gurgling perv vocal upchuck and roaring poser decimation. This album is a seriously good time. And that cover art is obviously sikk as fukk. Completely essential.

Oath of Cruelty with their 2012 EP ‘Hellish Decimation’, two tracks of the other OTHER War Metal, summoning the murderous intensity and hammering barbarian Teuton Thrash of ‘Tapping The Vein’ era Sodom and dialing everything beyond taste and decency via berzerker blast beats and Death Metal aural dimensions. Replete with temple crushing grooving Thrash riffs and stacked up infernal rhythms, disastrously lethal leads frothing with bloodlust and razor throated vocal from Hades. Deathleaping from blitzing fast Death Thrash mayhem to full-on pit frenzy mid-paced near-crossover thrashing murder, massive tom strikes prelude the devastation as posers are wasted in no mans land amidst the chugging, fist banging riff affront. Guitars are provided by Dave Callier, he of the mighty Texan Grindcore institution P.L.F., and there are many similarities between the two band’s mean-as-fukk riffing styles to be found here. Boundless, blasting Death Thrash perfection borne of cruel, maniac zeal and fleet-footed fervor. Concrete production provides a deadly weight and martial power to these tracks. ‘Hellish Decimation’, indeed.

Released in 2011 on Feral Ward, ‘Farewell’ is Direct Control’s nasty, gnarly Skel masterpiece(piss) stamped in 12″ wax – furious skate thrashing Hardcore for freaks only, an acid cruster rager deranged and off the rails. Super raw guitar scratch riffs tearing across mad manic thrasher Bass twang with perfect punchy blown out sound, careening drums just on the right side of in-time and super sick aggro kid vocal dripping with demented energy! Channels the mutant waste of Cryptic Slaughter and Excel’s early melted Crossover Thrash sound right into the eye of their DC Hardcore, and draws from the spirits of old Heavy Metal and Hard Rock too, with little Surf  passages and jams here and there, warped from some rad dimension and psybeamed into Richmond VA. 15 minutes of far out fast-as-fukk Hardcore/Thrashcore perfection, deep fried in shitty blasting in-the-red production where the drums sound serrated and the vocal booms like a motherfucker. I don’t often throw a link to youtube on here but I had to revisit this record and it’s not on bandcamp. But who cares, it looks like it’s still available on wax – get one and hesh the fuck out! RIP Brandon Farrell.

Perverted sacrosanct Speed/Black/Thrash Metal from New York, a side project of the band Spite. ‘Morbid Lust’ is a liturgical text of  ripping speed metal trill-heavy riffing, fat Bass underpinning the eerie ire of drumming, and uproariously demented cackling vocal emanations from the blackened soul dripping with STDs, hellhammering away in strange and vulgar forms with mid-paced motorcycle booted hard rocking, full throttle poserscything thrash and rollicking double bass passages, with crescendos of songs reaching catchy, invasive orgasmic peaks before descending into spent ruin. Dionysian indeed. A whole heap of drunken, sextanic debauchery, uproariously deliciously melodic Black/Speed/Thrash possessed with the Geist of evil!

Spirit Possession’s Self Titled full length delivers the lunatic promise of their excellent demo – shrieking, hysterical Black Metal virulent with Speed/Thrash/Heavy Metal influences, menacing glowering poltergeist energy aura of boundless possessive savagery!  Trill and treble drenched Guitars and killer Bass work form unorthodox, mind bending Thrash tinged riffs in obstinately rocking arrangements, at once angular, dissonant and mindlessly catchy, fiercely conjured Drums display similar unorthodoxy and chaoticism amidst straight forward hammering grooves and rocking the fuck out, a summoning of upheave vocal glossolalia dribbling with madness and dripping with delicious delay decay, haywire synths and noise pieces fomenting madness and weird unsettling auras. Sounds similar to the works of Funereal Presence, Craft, Negative Plane and Aura Noir, for reference, although Spirit Possession’s particular angular edges and incensed vocal delirium are all their own. Excellent.

Possessed Death Metal from Concrete Winds, born from the corpse of the also excellent Vorum. Deranged Thrash-influenced merciless Death Metal of ancient evil, face crushing, trend denouncing raw mid production with insanely aggressive psychotic divebomb solos from hell, injurious and impish screaming vocal, fukked up riffs of the meanest, most demented order and skin meltingly intense drumming – streamlined and annihilating, a basis of Thrashing Death Metal perverse, mean and obscene, with a cruel and bloodlusting blitzkrieg vibe usually found at the sharper edges of Black Thrash. The album doesn’t rely purely on blasting either, also reminding of the corrupted dynamism and sheer rhythmic power of Order From Chaos, with lots of unexpected mid-paced groovers and offense-accented slower parts. This record is a total fucking firestorm.

My favorite split 7″ from this era of Agoraphobic Nosebleed, released on Bones Brigade in 2007. An extra-ordinarily acidic collision of nihilist hysteria riffer Thrash skate Grind and broken Grind psychedelia anarchist mindbleed, with some of Florian Bertmer’s finest adorning the cover. ANb’s side features three of their very best tracks, for my money – ‘Self Detonate’s’ caustic spite could melt through a fuckin engine block, an ode to mindless drug abuse and demented knowledge-of-self set to mutant groove Thrash riffs at half speed, mid paced Hardcore skate cruise HATE and vocal just dripping in laconic indecency and unknowable disgusts. Then ‘Degenerate Liar’ and ‘Alcoholocaust’ lampoon and amuse with total Speed Metal riff feast, Thrash as fukk pre-drumkit from hell complex blast beats and tar-black lyrical causticisms, merciless witticism and sardonic inscrutability. Pete Benumb’s deranged vocal dribbling fury and the pinch-accented haggard riff playing out over the breakdown part at the close of ‘Degenerate Liar’, the long excruciating narcosis howl that beckons the second half of Self Detonate’s laughing kamikaze thermonuclear meltdown, the jazzy drum fills and details beneath the mean, mutating riff in ‘Alcoholocaust’ punching your stupid fuckin’ teeth out of your head – absolutely gnarly! Liable to rip and smash that nose right off your ugly mug (talk about fuckin’ ‘gore grind’). Then Total Fucking Destruction rip a bong, drop in all stupid crooked, bust a third eye on the coping and fall jammin’ into a free-associative grinding state of unconsciousness. ‘Last night I dreamt we destroyed the world’ unfurls a THC free-flow with drifting blast beats, warped sonic delirium and proselytizing of the inalienable truth of total PEACE, searing Bass jams with punchy yet pliable yogic blasting, overjoyed strumming, a stoned enigma under the half pipe, leading screaming and crazed into a possessed cover of The Exploited’s ‘Sid Vicious Was Innocent’. Peace Is, of course, the Victory. Some of TFD’s best shit, too, despite the brevity. Crucial 7″.

Rehearsal raw evil Metals from Chile, ruthless Black Thrash Metal with lots of Doom and Heavy Metal influence and a really evil, possessed vibe. Old Germanic style Thrash Metal cruelty and sodomic wrath, live-mix drum sound with terrifyingly tight Toms of war, rasping deimos vocal spite, thrashing and scything riffs over very possessed and fluid drumming, swordthrust riffers full of barbarian hate! Fucking killer cover, too – Cimmerian Metal to slay feeble serpentile gods! Great rehearsal demo with appropriately dungeon dwelling atmosphere. For Crom!

Bandcamp

Lunar sickness lysergic Death Metal lucidity, formless madness portending Doom! Spiralling chaos portal disruption, howling at the yellow moon, gibbering in the braying darkness, overdosed and alone. Nightmarish Death Metal from beyond the fucking chasm! Weird evocations of the occult – dismal dissonance and lurid atmospheric, inverted Death Metal necromancy. Not especially riff-centric, particularly compared to their previous work – They have that otherworldly aura that the best of the Funeral/Death Doom underground achieve, like Skepticism or Disembowelment, but with a delirious drugged conscious and a ravenous appetite for the deranged. Insanely good drumming, very free form and fluid and yet devastatingly heavy at times, rapturous Guitar sounds, vocal expulsions and incantations of the insane. Blast beats summoned and then subsumed into toppling Doom arrangements. Warping solos rending the flesh of the mind, third eye torn asunder. The last track, in particular, is completely mental in it’s free associative Metal of Death profundity-in-momentary-worship and spontaneity. Swallowed’s previous demos and their EP each have an element of workmanlike Death Metal to them; this one nearly entirely abandons such inspirations in favour of disassociation and enshrined ego blood sacrifice. Real death black magic. Get a copy from Black Phlegm right here.

Three tracks of disturbed Death Doom from Finland’s Swallowed, portentious, horrific and deadly. Swallowed play primordial pre-genre-codification Metal of Death, rife with doomy slow passages and thrashing mania, with lots of influence from Autopsy and Winter. Choking vocal bile and madness, swirling nightmare riffs and portal dark shifting tempos. Lumbering and crushing, wild eyed and feral, with a dreadful and disturbing atmosphere. Swallowed would even further abstract their Death Metal sound into psychedelic occult territory with their full length record ‘Lunarterial’, but here they maintain more adherence to Death Doom form. Blackened and caustic, slimy, primitive Death Metal. Essential.

Russian Stenchcore misery. Deathly Crust/Stenchcore, taking influence from Sacrilege, Axegrinder, Hellbastard, old Bolt Thrower, you know the sound. Downcast and furious, switching tempos from slow crushing to mid pace cruising Thrash, with metallic chugging and catchy punk riffs, strangled guitar solos, desperate ghost of war vocal and a fucken filthy sheen of apocalyptic despair and post-human Killing Joke desperation. Miserable and memorable Metalpunk, battle hardened Stenchcore. Humans in chains upon the Altar of Destruction. Dig it, mutie!

Vast apocalyptic Stenchcore from Boston, Massachusetts. Thrashng Metalpunk from the darkest recesses of a failed civilisation. A short Synth opening piece gives way to barbarously crusty Thrashin’, thunderous drums underpinning muscular, downbeat and damn catchy guitars and throaty, echoic full-desperation vocal sorrow. Great sound quality, rough and booming, the drums in particular are perfectly burgeoning and classic-sounding. Properly downcast, archaic Metalpunk for bleak times; excellently executed, terminally filthy Stenchcore. A very promising demo. If you enjoy Sacrilege, don’t hesitate and grab this. Then blast it from the empty windows in an abandoned tenement building.

Captain Three Leg takes a knowing swipe at Goregrind, and it’s a whole heap of grumpy fun. Andy surgically un-mans the Goregrind genre with kid-friendly scissors with his sweeping statements on clean posing gore fanatics who brush their teeth. It’s very funny and feels pretty well targeted. You’ve got to be able to laugh at yourself, otherwise it’s more distasteful when you start laughing at your peers across the genre micro-definitions. Andy is a very metatextual (ha!) Grindcore observer, and he’ll often slam the fucking door in the face of a recent trend or old trope in a way only he could think of. This is what makes Captain Three Leg one of the best bands in the Grindcore scene at large, to me. I mean, that album cover-within-a-cover is just perfection. Musically it matches it’s lyrical intent, with low tuned blasting Goregrind being the order of the day; some excellent riffing in an old-school Carcass style, pitch shifted vocal and some gastric samples. Guro from Brazil then make themselves known, with very riffy, deathly thrashing and blasting Grindcore. They remind me a lot of Population Reduction or Gate; lots of thrash as fukk riffs, dynamic drumming, throaty vocal growls/yells and killer samples. Headbang inducing, fast as fuck bassless Grindcore. I hadn’t heard Guro before this split, and I love their tracks here. An overall excellent split!

Thrashing Death Metal glory! Old school Death/Thrash played by devotional maniacs; divebombing Guitar squalls and squeals, twang Bass excellence, thrashing galloping rhythms, throaty vocal menace, strong Riffs and poser-destroying leads. The Bass tone is seriously wonderful, in fact the production in general is spot-on. There’s a teeny touch of first wave Black Metal primordiality here, as you’d hope from a band playing Ancient Metal of this type. Think early Slayer, Celtic Frost, or early Death. Necro! Grab a tape from the excellent Headsplit Records, and listen to in a boneyard with beers. Short and sweet. (Edit – this one sold out, so listen to the MP3s in your room and pretend it’s a boneyard, poser).

Night Fever were a four piece straight outta Denmark, dishing out violent, Thrashing Hardcore. ‘New Blood’ is fast, super metal sounding but gritty and punk too. Fast paced, Thrash riffing, half time Hardcore parts, Yelled/Screeching Vocal that’s metal as hell and an overall 80’s vibe. Think Cryptic Slaughter, D.R.I. and even old T.S.O.L., but also with a certain Crust/Anarcho sound a la GISM or Selfish. A totally ripping, ultra throwback heshfest, and a good time all round. Pound beers and destroy your parents house. From the always reliable and Thrashtacular Tankcrimes!

I’m reviewing this great compilation to draw some attention to Tankcrimes, an amazing label in California that deals in Grindcore, Death Metal, Hardcore, Punk and Grunge. Here you get a nice cross section of the kind of music on offer at Tankcrimes. 21 tracks spanning the above mentioned genres, all with a similarly gnarly, blown out skate vibe. This is like getting a mixtape from your older, burnt-out hesher cousin, filled with rad Thrash, Death Metal and tripped out, riffy Hardcore. I will admit I had heard a lot of these songs elsewhere, however this compilation turned me on to Face The Rail, an awesome Thrash/Surf/Punk band with a heavy 70’s vibe, and Direct Control, who sound like meth heads playing Thrash faster than their abilities allow. Also, Agoraphobic Nosebleed’s ‘Alcohol’ cover is as good as the Gang Green original, in my humble opinion. An overall highly recommended release! If you dig this the go scope out Tankcrimes, they have a great bandcamp page with a few free download releases, I’m going to review some of that stuff in the coming days. Get rad!
